MY 3200 Electron Diffraction Fall 2002

The following electron diffraction patterns (A,B & C) were obtained from a thin foil of Al using the transmission electron microscope.

  1. For each diffraction pattern obtain the three principal reciprocal lattice vectors in the pattern and hence the beam direction in each pattern.
  2. Using the calculated beam direction, plot the corresponding zone on a stereographic projection.
  3. Use the zone plotted on the stereographic projection to fully index the pattern in a consistent manner.

Pattern A

Pattern B

Pattern C

The pattern below is from a cubic crystal. What types of cubic symmetry could generate this pattern, Primitive (P), Body Centered (I), Face Centered (F), C-Face Centered (C) or Diamond (D)?
