GIFT DESIGNATIONS:The department has several specific needs which would greatly enhance our ability to:

  • Provide a hands-on education to our students.
  • Investigate new research areas.
  • Create a pathway for state-of-the-art, scientific understanding by our students.

In order to achieve these goals, we ask the participation of alumni and friends in helping to fund various projects. We gladly accepting any level of monetary donation.

We are identifying several key areas of new equipment acquisitions. Below are the first two designations. You may help us to meet the goal by giving online. Under "Gift Designation", please select "Materials Science and Engineering". Every contribution is vital to our success. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering gratefully acknowledges all contributions to our programs.

Success Stories

Charles (“Mac”) McArthur

  • Graduated with honor with a BS in Metallurgical Engineering in 1950.
  • Retired in 1990 as Executive Vice President of BHP Utah Minerals International in San Francisco, California. In the early 1960's, Mr. McArthur actively participated in setting up coal preparation facilities and equipment for Utah's first mines in Australia's Bowen Basin and was also involved in port feasibility engineering prior to the company's decision to build the port of Hay Point near Mackay, Queensland. He oversaw the design, construction and operation of Island Copper Mine in the late 1960's and went on to head up the former Western Hemisphere Mining Group. In his most recent post, he headed up a worldwide marketing network for BHP's minerals businesses. He worked briefly for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company and the US Atomic Energy Commission. “Mac” joined Utah International in 1959 as Director of Metallurgical Research. He was appointed Manager of Technical Services in 1965 and in 1969 was named Vice President and Manager of the Island Copper Mine in British Columbia. He was Senior Vice President and Manager of the Mining Division, later the Western Hemisphere Mining Group. He was also a Director of Utah International Inc and Chairman of Utah Development Company Limited. He assumed his Marketing post in 1987. BHP-Utah Minerals International is the Minerals Group of BHP Co Ltd, an international resources company headquartered in Melbourne Australia.
  • In 2001, established an endowment for the Charles & Carroll McArthur Research Internship for undergraduates interested in working with MSE faculty on research, with the potential for success in pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. degree.
  • Inducted into MSE Academy in 2006; received Board of Control Silver Medal in 1980.
  • He and his wife Carroll (formerly of the Iron Range area) currently reside in Folsom, California.
  • Continues to be a strong supporter of MSE students and department.
  • Contributor to M&M 610 - Seminar Room.

John Towers

  • Graduated from Michigan Tech with B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering in 1943. Continued on to earn his M.S. in metallurgical engineering from University of Notre Dame in 1950. Received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering from MTU in 1978.
  • John Towers served with the US Army Corps of Engineers during WWII before joining AMAX in 1946 as an assistant metallurgist. He was promoted to foreman of the Smelting Dept and then to general superintendent of smelting and refining. In 1959, he was promoted to general manager and in 1963 to director of AMAX's domestic copper activities. He was elected corporate vice president in 1966 and assumed duties as Base Metals group executive in 1967. John was elected to the Board of Directors in 1969. He became executive vice president in 1975 and was elected president in October 1977. He was with AMAX for 36+ years. After retiring from AMAX in 1982, he worked for several years as an independent mineral consultant. He also served as a director of several mining companies.
  • In 2001, he established the John & Virginia Towers Distinguished Lecture Series, which provides funding for key academicians to visit the department as part of a Distinguished Lecture Series, thereby promoting on campus the field of Materials Science and Engineering. These lectures serve as a recruitment tool for both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Inducted into the MSE Academy in 1996; received Board of Control Silver Medal in 1969.
  • Resides in LaFayette, CA, with his wife Virginia, and greatly enjoys reminiscing about Michigan Tech and the local area.
