MSE students work for Alcoa
Two MSE students returned
from a summer internship last
August with many stories of
their international work experience.
Both Ben Poquette and
Ben Bernard traveled abroad
to work for Alcoa Aluminio in
Brazil.
The international engineering
opportunity was made available
through the Materials
Science and Engineering
department by the A l c o a
F o u n d a t i o n .
The duo left the States on
May 18. Poquette assisted a
Brazilian university with a procedure
to test refractory brick,
while Bernard worked on a
project characterizing defects
in flat rolled aluminum.
Working at Alcoa provided
both Poquette and Bernard a
positive international learning
experience.
"I learned how to keep communication
flowing between
two different cultures and languages.
I also learned a lot
about aluminum processing,"
Poquette said.
Bernard took the internship
strictly for international working
experience. "I was interested
in an international experience
and Alcoa gave me the
option," he said. "This internship
introduced me to new
technological, cultural, and life
experiences. It was very valuable
to grow as a metallurgist
and an international businessman,
both goals in my life."
